Final Thoughts in Iowa as Caucus Draws to a Close

U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) spent a lot of time here in Iowa and it paid off. He visited each of the 99 counties in the state.

His team said they believe he won because his message resonated and because of the grassroots efforts that included 12,000 volunteers.

One of them was Allie Ziegler, who you may have seen on the news Sunday. She is a 13-year-old from Lubbock who made 833 phone calls for Cruz Saturday alone. I caught up with her again at Cruz's Monday night event. She added up all her calls for the week and tells me she made 2,128.

Here she is with her family (in the hat).

It has been a really busy two days. It will be nice to eat something not served through a window. It is all go, go, go. But one thing I have learned in television. It's when something that moves so fast is over, you realize what an experience it has been.

One thing is certain, the people of Iowa could not have been nicer. Whether it was talking about voting, candidates, or the weather, they are proud to be the first primary contest.

Next up, two debates in four days and then off to New Hampshire. I am hoping to get some sleep and eat some salads.

Thanks for taking the ride with us!
