Former state Sen. David Sibley his taking an early lead in his bid to retake the Texas Senate seat he held for 11 years.

The Republican was leading three opponents in early returns Saturday in a special election.

The veteran Republican from Waco served in the Senate from 1991 to 2002. He's running against Democrat Gayle Avant and Republicans Brian Birdwell and Darren Yancy.

They're vying for the seat most recently held by Republican Sen. Kip Averitt, who has resigned.

Averitt announced in January that he was dropping out of the race, but it was too late to get his name off the ballot and he won re-election in March.
