Denton County Voters Reflect on President Trump

More than 57 percent of Denton County voters cast their ballot for President Donald Trump, so NBC 5 checked with voters there for their thoughts on the latest news from Washington.

Voter John Lowry was among Trump's supporters last November. But if the election were held today?

"I don't know to be honest with you. I want to say yes, but then I want to say no, because you don't know what you would have gotten going the other way," Lowry said. "He (Trump) needs to learn to keep his mouth shut maybe on a few things."

Last week, Trump fired FBI Director James Comey, and reports soon followed that claimed the president had asked Comey to halt the investigation into former National Security Advisor Michael Flynn.

Then, following a meeting in the Oval Office with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and Russian Ambassador Sergei Kislyak, reports indicated that Trump shared intelligence information that was supplied by Israel.

And on Wednesday, former FBI Director Robert Mueller was appointed as a special counsel in charge of the investigation into Russia's alleged interference in the election.

"I feel like he has had a hard road because of so much opposition against his presidency," said voter Stacey Masten. "What is true, what is not? It is kind of hard to flush out in the midst of so much opposition."

Lisa Hendrickson, chairwoman of the Denton County Republican Party, said the news doesn't change her opinion of the president.

"I think it continues to add fuel to the fire of so many conservatives that again are frustrated that nothing is happening. Nothing in Washington, D.C., is progressing for the American people," Hendrickson said.

She believes that the 57-plus percent of voters who supported Trump in the election could be an even higher number now.

"I think there were some people that really wanted more of an establishment, I'd say, candidate, and I think you have more people that are seeing the executive orders, seeing his passion, seeing his dedication, and seeing his work ethic, that I don't think a lot of us knew or understood," Hendrickson said.
