Capitol Dome Gets Fresh Coat of Paint

The dome of the Texas Capitol is getting a new paint job and the House chamber will be closed to the public for several months while workers paint the ceiling.

It's part of a $3 million restoration project.

Scaffolding will start going up outside the dome around May 1. Workers will start moving the antique furniture and historical paintings out of the House chamber on Thursday.

John Sneed, executive director of the Texas Preservation Board, said Wednesday the project should be done in time to decorate the House chamber by late November. The 2011 legislative session begins in January.

The dome project is expected to be finished by Dec. 31.
