Abbott: DOJ Voting Maps Challenge Won't Wreak Havoc

Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott says a new voting maps challenge by the Obama administration shouldn't wreak havoc on the 2014 elections calendar.

Abbott said Thursday there is "no need to have any uncertainty" despite the Justice Department launching a new court challenge against how free Texas is to draw new political boundaries.

Challenges to voting maps in 2012 delayed party primaries in Texas and affected races.

Abbott says a repeat shouldn't take place in 2014 since the state basically still uses the same maps. Next year's primaries are scheduled for March 4.

The Obama administration says a history of discrimination in Texas demands that the state continue to seek preclearance to change voting laws. Abbott called the move political theater and says election boundaries are free of discrimination.
