About 17 pilot whales were discovered stranded at high tide for the second time in days near a roadside on New Zealand's South Island's Golden Bay, a charity that helps protect marine mammals reported Sunday.
Dozens of volunteers spent Friday and Saturday trying to save 650 of the stranded whales. And as NBC News reports, while many of the whales died before rescuers could save them, about 240 were able to refloat themselves.
Kyle Mulinder, a volunteer with Project Jonah, told The Associated Press this is "one of the biggest strandings [he's] ever seen."
