Investigators have yet to determine how the remains of four bodies ended up in the Southern California desert. Forensic experts will run DNA tests to see if the bodies are related and whether they are male or female. Hetty Chang reports for the NBC4 News at 11 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 13, 2013. Sheriff's investigators Wednesday were excavating what appeared to be a grave site in a remote desert area of San Bernardino County after human skeletal remains were found scattered across the high desert.

A motorcyclist reported finding the remains about 10 a.m. Monday in the area between Quarry and Stoddard Wells roads, just north of Victorville, the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department Victorville Station said.

The remains of four people were found in shallow graves just off the 15 Freeway in Victorville on Wednesday. Investigators are now trying to determine how the remains got there and whether a crime was committed. Tony Shin reports from Victorville for the NBC4 News at 5 p.m. on Nov. 13, 2013. When investigators began to analyze the bones, they came across another set of remains in a shallow grave about 6 to 8 feet away, sheriff's spokeswoman Jodi Miller said.

Investigators were also digging up a third area just north of the two grave sites, where the soil "seemed suspicious," but found nothing in the third site.

The skeletal remains of at least two people were found in a remote desert area in San Bernardino County, and investigators were excavating a third area near the grave site for more. Coroner's investigators confirmed that the remains were human.

Investigators said they believed the remains were that of four people, and it appeared that the remains had been there for "an extended period of time."

Animals may have dug up some of the remains and scattered them around the desert, officials said.

Excavators set up tents and used hand tools to dig up soil where the remains were found.

The age and gender will be determined after a DNA test is performed on the remains.
