Close Call: Seal Narrowly Escapes Shark Attack

A seal tight-roped the tip of a great white shark's nose then avoided death in a dramatic moment captured by a photographer.

Wildlife photographer David Jenkins documented the intense sequence of events in July off the coast of Cape Town, South Africa, as the seal escaped the jaws of death. Jenkins also took a second photo showing the seal landing back in the water and narrowly eluding the shark.

Jenkins was on a shark cruise as he witnessed the seal trekking toward Seal Island when the great white leaped from the water and made its move, NBC News reported.

Feedings along the tip of South Africa are relatively common. A 2005 study on predatory behavior of great whites at Seal Island found 2,088 cases of sharks hunting seals from 1997 to 2003.
