Manholes Explode in Boston

No injuries reported

Utility crews were on the scene for hours in downtown Boston where multiple manholes exploded Sunday morning.

Boston Police said they received calls around 11 a.m. after an unspecified number of manholes exploded then caught fire and sent the 110 pound covers flying into the air around Cambridge and Sudbury streets, near Government Center.

“I say that’s pretty shocking as a resident that lives up the hill that’s certainly cause for concern,” one local commented.

Officials say an old, blackened, and corroded wire caused the explosion. Crews pulled it out of the ground Sunday afternoon.

Eversource was on scene to turn off power in the area and officers from the Boston Police Department rerouted traffic until officials were able to get the traffic signals running.

Crews worked for hours and were able to restore power back to the area.

No injuries were reported.
