Brothers on Life Support Die After Irving Pool Rescue

Two brothers who have been on life support since last Wednesday after an incident at an Irving, Texas, pool have died.

Police confirmed that Anthony Smith, 11, and his brother, Treshawn, 9, died Sunday night.

The boys, along with their 10-year-old sister, August, were found unconscious in the water of a swimming pool at the MacArthur Place at 183 apartment complex last week.

According to police, the three drifted into the deep end as their mother's back was turned.

A nearby maintenance man jumped into the pool and pulled two of the unconscious children out. A police officer arrived and was able to pull the third child from the water.

All three children were transported to Children's Medical Center in Dallas. August died Wednesday night.

Officers are investigating the incident as an accidental death case.

However, if the facts and circumstances support that a crime has occurred, the case will be referred to the Dallas County District Attorney’s Office.

Detectives ask that anyone who may have witnessed the events contact the Irving Police Department at 972-273-1010.

Tips for Safe Swimming This Summer

  • Bring a buddy: don't swim alone even at public pools or lifeguarded beaches.
  • Never leave young children unattended near water and never trust a child's life with another child.
  • Young children and inexperienced swimmers should always wear U.S. Coast Guard-Approved life jackets.
  • Establish rules, and always enforce them. Don't let children play around drains or suction fittings. Also, don't let children have breath-holding competitions.
  • Be aware: Cold temperatures, currents, and jagged rocks at rivers and lakes can make water dangerous.
  • Always wear a life jacket on a boat. Most boating fatalities occur from drowning.
  • Don't drink and swim. Alcohol impairs balance, coordination, and judgement.
  • Sign up for swimming lessons if you've never had them.
  • Always swim in areas supervised by lifeguards where available
