Boy Treated at Hospital After Shark Attack in Florida

"We took our belts off and wrapped it around his leg to try to stop the bleeding. The poor boy was screaming frantically"

A 13-year-old boy was badly hurt after a shark attack in Neptune Beach, Florida, according to police.

Neptune Beach police said a shark between 5 and 6 feet long bit the boy on his right leg. Other swimmers pulled the teen from the water around 3 p.m. Sunday.

"I saw blood coming from right here," 10-year-old Carter Barksdale told NBC affiliate WTLV, motioning toward his lower leg. "I saw two slits but I was panicking."

A lifeguard tower called in the incident, and the boy was rushed to the hospital with a gash on his calf and shin.

"We took our belts off and wrapped it around his leg to try to stop the bleeding. The poor boy was screaming frantically," beachgoer Chris Barkdale told WTLV.

The teen suffered non-life threatening injuries and was reported to be in stable condition around 5:30 p.m., police said.

Police said it was the first shark attack of the season at the beach.

Another shark attack was reported Sunday on the opposite coast, where a Southern California beach was shuttered after a woman suffered bites to her shoulder and torso
