Police arrested a San Bernardino mother on suspicion of murder after her 5-year-old son was found with stab wounds and later died Tuesday, according to the San Bernardino Police Department.

"It makes me want to pack up and leave," Sabrina Brown, a neighbor said. "Tragedy is everywhere you go. No matter what. But it's real sad."

Police responded to a 911 call from the 1000 block of West Temple at 4:11 p.m.

Officers found the 46-year-old mother, identified by police as Maria Isabel Bautista De Lopez, and her son with injuries.

The 5-year-old boy was stabbed by some type of sharp instrument and died at the home.

"My uncle was really attached to the little boy," Derrick Matthews, a neighbor who lives nearby, said. "The little boy would talk to him and show him his toys."

Lopez was taken to a local hospital. Officers said it appeared that her injuries were self-inflicted.

Police initially were detaining and interviewing people near the home.

Detectives interviewed Lopez, and investigated the home.

Neighbors watched as detectives searched a parked car and found dozens of pill bottles found in the trash.

After retrieving evidence at the house and from Lopez herself, police arrested her.
