Zebra Mussels Confirmed at Dean Gilbert Lake in Sherman

Pesky zebra mussels have turned up at another North Texas lake.

The Texas Parks & Wildlife Department on Friday announced zebra mussels have been found in Dean Gilbert Lake in Sherman. Lake water eventually flows back into the Red River, which also has invasive zebra mussels.

A North Texas Municipal Water District pipeline running beneath the lake carries raw water from Lake Texoma to a treatment plant in Wylie, near Dallas.

Officials recently found a leak. Experts will repair the pipeline, forcing a partial drawdown of Dean Gilbert Lake that could help manage the infestation.

Zebra mussels were first confirmed in Texas in 2009 at Lake Texoma, which spans Texas and Oklahoma.

Texas law requires boaters to drain and clean their watercraft to help stop the spread of zebra mussels.
