Wrecks Shut Down President George Bush Turnpike in Irving

The northbound lanes of President George Bush Turnpike were closed for several hours in Irving after two wrecks Thursday morning, authorities said.

Irving police said a driver slammed into the guardrail, which cut through the vehicle, near Beltline Road just before 4 a.m. The driver survived and was taken to a nearby hospital.

One officer told NBC 5 that the driver is lucky the guardrail did not cut him in half.

Then, just before 6 a.m., a pickup truck crashed into a wrecker that was being used to remove the vehicle from the first wreck. There is no word yet on the driver's condition, but he was moving his hands when paramedics loaded him into an ambulance.

The northbound lanes of PGBT were reopened just before 7:30 a.m.
