Woman, at Gunpoint, Fights off Robber

Denton police say a man closely resembling that of Charles Sprague tried to rob a woman at gunpoint, only to be fought off with pepper spray.

Police responded to an attempted robbery call in the 500 block of Fulton Drive in Denton on Thursday. The woman told police she was out walking when a man got out of an SUV and tried to rob her at gunpoint.

The woman said he grabbed her and tried to force her into his car. She was able to fight the man off after spraying pepper spray into his face.

Police said the description given by the woman closely resembles that of Charles Sprague, a 'violent sexual predator' on Texas' 10 Most Wanted Sex Offender List.

Sprague escaped from a halfway house in Fort Worth Wednesday but was eventually arrested Friday morning at the WinStar Casino and Hotel in Thackerville, Oklahoma.

He has an extensive criminal history, including convictions for aggravated sexual assault and aggravated kidnapping causing bodily injury/sexual abuse, police said.

Sprague is currently in custody in Love County, Oklahoma. Detectives are working with agencies from both states in the investigation, Denton city official Ryan Grelle said in a statement.
