A woman has been promoted to lieutenant in the Texas Rangers in a move making her the highest-ranking female in its storied history.

The Texas Department of Public Safety on Thursday announced Ranger Wende Wakeman's promotion takes effect Aug. 1.

Director Steven McCraw says Wakeman's promotion is the result of her "exemplary service and unwavering commitment" to protecting Texans and upholding DPS values.

Wakeman became a state trooper in 1998, serving in Sulphur Springs and New Caney. She was promoted to narcotics sergeant in 2003 and joined the Texas Rangers in 2008 in Conroe.
