Woman Dies After Being Swept Away in Austin: Authorities

Rescue crews in Austin have recovered the body of a woman who was tubing with friends when she was swept into a culvert and trapped, a death officials blamed at least in part on recent heavy rains.

Police and fire officials said at a news conference that the woman was tubing down Barton Creek near the Barton Springs Pool on Monday. A witness who saw the woman go down a bypass tunnel called authorities around 8:15 p.m.

Officials say she was pulled under and became stuck inside the culvert. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Austin Fire Department Division Chief Rob Vires says he believes the death is related to the recent rainfall that's created powerful moving water.

At least six other deaths in Texas have been blamed on the recent flooding.
