Woman Charged Hundreds of Dollars When Trying to Return Cellphone to Carrier

Thanks to online shopping we're always getting or returning packages these days. But what happens when one of the products breaks along the way?

Susan Wallace was leasing a couple of cellphones from Sprint. She decided to switch to another cellphone company, so she had to return her phones.

She shipped them via UPS, but Sprint told Wallace when they opened the box, one of the phones was damaged.

Wallace said Sprint had her on the phone for weeks trying to figure out what to do with the broken phone.

Then she got a call from a collection agency, saying she owed Sprint the full price of the phone.

NBC 5 Responds reached out, and Sprint apologized.

They gave Wallace her money back for the phone, a credit and said they are grateful they had the opportunity to correct it.

When you are returning something to a company using prepaid labels, always ask if the shipment is insured in case something goes wrong.

If it isn't, call the company and see if it is willing to pay for insurance.

If not, you may want to add the extra cash, especially for expensive items like a cellphone.
