Woman Arrested in Connection With Infant Son's Death

A 37-year-old Arlington woman has been arrested in connection with the death of her 17-month-old child.

Police said Keashia Dyon Matthews left her son, Darrell Singleton III, unattended in her SUV while she went to work in Bedford on Sept. 3.  She told police she repeatedly checked on her son throughout the day, but noticed something was wrong with him when she left work that afternoon.  Matthews then drove into Arlington to pick up her two daughters from school, ages 5 and 6, before taking the boy to Arlington Memorial Hospital.

Unsuccessful attempts were made to resuscitate the boy, who had a temperature of 107 degrees, police said. The Tarrant County Medical Examiner is waiting for toxicology results for a final ruling in Darrell’s death, police said.

The confession came after she initially told authorities that she stayed home that day with her son since she didn't have childcare available.

A warrant was later issued for Matthews' arrest on the charge of injury to a child/serious bodily injury, a first-degree felony. She turned herself into police on Friday, Sept. 25.

Matthews is being held on $13,000 bond.  Her daughters are currently in the care of Child Protective Services.
