Woeful Sixers Have a Ways to Go to Match Misfit Mavericks of 1993-94

Feel sorry for the Philadelphia 76ers if you must.

But you ain’t seen nothing yet.

The woeful Sixers coughed up 30 points to the Celtics’ Kelly Olynyk in an 18-point loss last night. It dropped them to 2-22. It also dropped them to 0-13 at home.

In other words, they’re only about 70 percent on the way to being as bad as the Mavericks 20 years ago.

I covered a couple of those Mavs’ games for the Fort Worth Star-Telegram in 1993-94, and it was dreadful. They were coached by the very unlikeable Quinn Buckner and featured prominent players such as Tim Legler, Donald Hodge and Derek Harper.

Those Mavs started 2-39 on their way to 13-69, which – amazingly – was a two-game improvement from the previous season. But the thing I most remember about those Mavericks – they lost their first 19 home games and didn’t win a game at Reunion Arena until Jan. 29.

So keep plugging along Sixers. And wake us in a month if you still haven’t won a home game. By winning even less, those Mavs have you beat.
