Witness Subdues Knife-Wielding Robber: Midlothian Police

A Midlothian man is behind bars, accused of trying to rob a convenience store, police say.

Dylan Bearden, 19, entered the Oasis Food Store Exxon station in the 1600 block of 9th Street last Friday morning, pushed a customer, identified aside and threatened the cashier with a knife, according to Midlothian police.

But the customer fought back, taking the knife and subduing Bearden until police arrived.

That customer, Daniel Gaskey, told NBC 5, he was in the right place, at the right time.

"It was a quick assessment, quick reaction, not too much to think about, jumped on his back, knocked him to the ground, got my arm around his neck and told her to call 911," said Gaskey. Then I rolled him onto the ground, just sat on him, maintained control of his arms until the police got there.”

Gaskey does not want to be called a hero. After police arrived, he continued on his way to work.

“We try not to make it too big of a deal. You know, it’s do the right thing when you can, and life is good, you know,” he added.

Bearden is charged with aggravated robbery and is jailed on a $200,000 bond.
