Winners of Online Math Competition Announced

Students from across Texas solved 91 million math problems in four weeks

A third-grade classroom from A.D Harvey Elementary School in the Kingsville Independent School District has been named the 2015 Lonestar Math Cup Champion after solving nearly 50,000 complex math problems.

The South Texas classroom passed over 2,500 math lessons on the Think Through Math online learning system, and they did it in just 26 days.

The contest engaged nearly 10,000 elementary schools throughout Texas against each other to see which classroom could complete and pass the most math lessons on the TTM system. More than one million Texas students across the state had the opportunity to participate at school, during after school programs, and at home.

Students completed a total of more than 3 million lessons and solved more than 91 complex math problems over a four-week period.

The winning class will participate in an award ceremony, where they will received the Lonestar Math Cup trophy, champion banner, t-shirts, and commemorative certificates.

“Every year our statewide math competitions generate enthusiasm and mass participation among TTM students and schools, and this year is no different,” said Kevin McAliley, CEO of Think Through Math.  “More than generating healthy competition among students, the Lonestar Math Cup creates a fun and motivating environment to learn more math.”

Think Through Math has also awarded regional champions in each of the 20 Educational Service Centers throughout the state.  In addition, two special award winners were recognized with a $50 classroom gift card:

  • The Texas Gurus of Giving Award, which is given to classes that donated the most THINK points to one of TTM’s featured charities, has been awarded to Ms. Vargas’ 5th grade class of Woodland Acres Elementary School in Galena Park ISD. The class donated $144 to various TTM featured charities.
  • The Evening/Weekend Warrior Award, which is given to the class that worked the most outside of school hours, has been awarded to Ms. Perea’s 4th grade class of Keller Elementary School in the Keller ISD, which logged more than 106,000 hours in after school and weekend time.
