Willacy County Begins Effort to Save Courthouse

An effort is underway to raise money to help renovate a South Texas courthouse that was closed nearly a month ago because of mold.

The Valley Morning Star in Harlingen reports that leaders in Willacy County plan to set up a nonprofit to seek private donations to raise money to go toward the restoration of the courthouse in Raymondville.

County Judge Aurelio Guerra says a committee will oversee the organization that will seek donations to help the county pay its share of a prospective $3 million Texas Historical Commission grant.

Guerra says a contracted firm recommends renovating the courthouse in stages to help with the cost.

The project is expected to cost about $7.3 million.
