Weekend West Texas Wildfire Destroys 7 Homes

A wildfire destroyed seven homes in a rural area near the West Texas town of Eula. Meanwhile, a wildfire burned almost 3 square miles of ranchland north of Amarillo.

The fires, which both started Saturday, came after experts had warned of an increased threat in some areas because of warmer temperatures, moderate winds and low relative humidity. The threat was expected to lessen by Wednesday.

Texas A&M Forest Service spokesman Phillip Truitt says the fire near Eula, which burned 1 square mile, was contained by Sunday evening. Evacuated residents were able to return by Saturday night. Two of the destroyed homes had been unoccupied.

Texas A&M Forest Service spokesman Troy Ducheneaux says the wildfire near Amarillo was 95 percent contained Monday. It didn't burn any structures.

Causes haven't been determined.
