Fort Worth Fire Department crews were called before 6 p.m. to the 3400 block of High River Road, where they said the two people had been riding a pair of ATVs when they went into the river and became stranded.

The men were apparently attempting to cross at what is normally a shallow crossing but were swept downstream by the river that is still swollen from overnight rains.

One of the men had a cell phone and managed to call 911 from the middle of the river.

Officials said the men could not swim, so the rescue involved sending a firefighter out to them, one at a time, with a life jacket and a rope to help guide the men safely to shore.

“Circumstances came together well for them today. Thankfully, they were able to call 911 from a cell that was still working after taking a swim in the river,” said Kyle Faulkner, spokesperson for the Fort Worth Fire Department.

MedStar crews checked the men at the scene and said they were not injured.

Police said it is the men’s responsibility to remove the all-terrain vehicles from the river.
