A huge water main break shut down the Interstate 35 service road around Inwood Road in Dallas on Thursday night.

At least a foot of water covered the roadway, and a car that drove into it got stranded. The water main break also knocked out water service to nearby hotels and restaurants.

The current heat wave could be behind the water main break. Repair crews said that when it gets this hot outside, pipes can crack and break.

Crews working on the break said they hoped to repair it and reopen the road by the morning commute.

NBC 5's Amanda Guerra contributed to this report.
