The city council approved a proposal Tuesday night to re-zone a 64-acre site near Hardin Boulevard and McKinney Ranch Parkway for the stadium and events center. The facility would replace Ron Poe Stadium, where all three McKinney Independent School District high schools play their games.

The stadium makes up nearly a quarter of a $220 million bond package. The bond package does not include the construction of any new schools, only major renovations to current facilities.

Several people spoke in favor of the plan, but opponents who live nearby have concerns about the traffic the new stadium would bring.

β€œIt’s not right that elected officials do to other citizens what they do not want done to their own property," McKinney resident Laura Lutek said. "So clearly the 'not in my backyard' attitude is at work here."

The school board is scheduled to vote on the bond package Thursday. If approved, it would go before voters in May.
