Decades Later, Vietnam Vets Welcomed Home

Vietnam veterans were honored in White Settlement for a "Welcome Home" parade decades after their return to American soil.

Many Vietnam war soldiers, like Larry Hubbard, weren't met with cheers and welcomes upon their return.

In fact, they were met with abuse.

"They would spit on us, threw rocks at us, eggs– whatever," Hubbard said. Despite the abuse, Hubbard said he would fight again if he could.

"I'm an American, that's about the only way I know how to put it. I love this country and I believe in it."

Hubbard and dozens of other Vietnam veterans said Saturday's "Welcome Home" parade brought them peace. It also gave Elizabeth Chastain perspective, since her grandfather, Cliff Dalton, served in Vietnam as well.

He remembers landing on U.S. soil after the war. "There was what we thought was a greeting party until we could see their signs and they literally spit upon us," Dalton said.

He's since shared the horror stories with his family. But seeing him on a parade float created a memory that will stand the test of time.

"It is absolutely awesome," said Beverly Dalton, Cliff's wife. "It is a day we never thought would happen."

Neither did most of the veterans, including Dalton. Now, he's greeted with support and kisses from his wife, Beverly.

"I can't even put it into words and what it means to us. It's a long time coming but we're grateful for it."
