Van Cliburn Winners To Be Announced Tonight

Awards ceremony set for Cliburn piano competition

Winners of the 14th Van Cliburn International Piano Competition will be announced Sunday night in North Texas.

The six finalists are Sean Chen of the United States; Fei-Fei Dong of China; Vadym Kholodenko of the Ukraine; Nikita Mndoyants of Russia; Beatrice Rana of Italy; and Tomoki Sakata of Japan.

The winner receives $50,000, and the second- and third-prize winners both receive $20,000. All six receive three years of concert management.

The prestigious competition is held every four years in Fort Worth. Some teachers created it in 1962, four years after Cliburn won the first International Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow. His victory helped thaw the icy rivalry between the U.S. and the Soviet Union.

Cliburn died in February at age 78 at his Fort Worth home after battling bone cancer.
