TxDOT Spent $1.6 Million on Blizzard Cleanup

The Texas Department of Transportation spent nearly $1.6 million to cleanup after the blizzard last month that dropped 19 inches of snow on parts of the Panhandle.

TxDOT spokesman Paul Braun tells the Amarillo Globe-News the storm cost the agency $424,984 in labor, $792,553 in equipment expenses and $363,537 in material expenses.

The snowfall was an inch shy of Amarillo's 1934 record for one day and meteorologists reported 75-mph wind gusts. Many highways and roads were closed due to the surface snow and blowing snow that greatly reduced visibility.

The Feb. 25 storm knocked out power to about 4,000 Xcel Energy customers in the Panhandle and New Mexico.
