Two Teens Drown in Area Lakes

Search and recovery crews located the body of a 19-year-old man they said drowned in Lake Ray Hubbard Sunday morning.

Friends and eyewitnesses said the teen jumped in the lake behind the Bass Pro Shop on Zion Road near Garland just before 8 a.m. Sunday.   They said he swam about 30 feet from the shore when he went under and never resurfaced.

A helicopter, divers and boats were brought in to assist in the recovery.

Eyewitnesses said the unidentified teen was with friends who appeared to be drinking prior to the drowning.

A Fort Worth teen drowned in Joe Pool Lake near Lynn Creek Park Saturday evening.

The Tarrant County Medical Examiner’s Office said on its website Darrion Powell, 15, died at a hospital after being pulled from the lake just before 9 p.m. Saturday.

Investigators with the medical examiner’s office listed Powell’s cause of death as an accidental drowning.

Large groups of people often congregate in the waters off Lynn Creek Park near the Lynn Creek Marina’s public boat ramp.

It’s unclear what may have lead up to Powell’s drowning.  Calls to the Grand Prairie Police Department’s media spokesperson were not immediately returned Sunday.
