Two Students Injured in School Bus Near-Head On Crash

Two students were injured Tuesday morning when the Alvarado Independent School District school bus in which they were riding was involved in a crash, authorities say.

The bus was traveling southbound on Farm-to-Market Road 2738 at about 7 a.m. when a driver in a BMW 325i traveling northbound attempted to pass a vehicle at the same time the approaching the bus was in the same lane near County Road 505, according to a Texas Department of Public Safety spokesperson.

The BMW driver, identified as 51-year-old James White, of Alvarado, didn't make it back into his lane in time, DPS says, and the bus driver swerved to avoid a head-on crash.

The BMW stuck the left rear of the bus, knocking the left rear wheels off the bus.

Two students, both 12 years old, had minor injuries. One of the students was transported as a precaution to Methodist Hospital in Mansfield and later released. The other student was treated at the scene and released, DPS says.

White was transported via air ambulance to Methodist Hospital in Fort Worth in serious condition.

A passenger in the BMW was not injured.

There were 16 students on the bus at the time of the crash, and a second bus arrived to transport those who were uninjured to school.

White will be cited for passing when unsafe, DPS says.
