Two Men, Juvenile Charged After Unarmed Security Guard Gunned Down

Two adults and a juvenile have been arrested and charged with capital murder in connection with the slaying of an unarmed security guard on Sept. 30.

Rodney Demarist Rone, a 46-year-old noncommissioned and unarmed guard at the Bruton Beer and Wine Mart on the 2000 block of Masters Drive, was locking the door with another employee when they were confronted by three armed men, police said.

Rone tried to stop the armed robbery attempt, and was immediately shot multiple times. The trio, identified as 19-year-old Rickey Varnell Manning, 23-year-old Brandon Okeith Small and an unnamed juvenile, then entered the store, took money, a mobile phone and left the scene, police said.

Alisa Pennington, who lives near the store, said she heard the gunshots and rushed to Rone's side after she saw the three men leave the scene.

"I peeked out the window and I saw three guys, but they were totally covered head to toe in black. I saw a gun pointing, but I didn't see anybody else because there is an ice box thing in the way. I don't know, I freaked out. Everyone in my house was yelling and screaming," Pennington told NBC 5 in September. "He was lying right over there on the ground near the ice box, real short breaths, he wasn't doing too well."

Rone was transported to Baylor Medical Center in Dallas where he later died.  His co-worker was not injured.

Pennington added that she only knew the guard by his first name, but said she was devastated to learn of his death.

"He was very courteous, He didn't try to make problems or confrontations unless need be. He just tried to do his job," Pennington said.

NBC 5's Ashley Alquist and Josh Ault contributed to this report.
