Two Charged in Hunt Co. Boy's Death

Two caregivers have been accused of killing a 2-year-old boy whose battered body was found in a car in North Texas.

The Hunt County Sheriff's Office says capital murder charges were filed Tuesday against 23-year-old Arturo Vega and 22-year-old Gabriela Ortiz, both of Campbell.

Capt. Lana Adams says Vega and Ortiz, who's a cousin to the victim, face arraignment and did not yet have attorneys. They are being held in the Hunt County detention center, bond was set at $2 million each.

The body of Brandon Herrera was located following a 911 call, allegedly from Vega and Ortiz, to say the boy stopped breathing Sunday as they drove him to a hospital.

Investigators say the toddler suffered blunt force trauma and apparently had been dead for some time. No information was released on a possible motive.

The sheriff's office has been in contact with the boy's father.
