Trying to lose a few pounds in the New Year? Well, why not help a four-legged friend in the process?

Leaders at the Denton Animal Shelter are encouraging people to come by and volunteer this year as dog walkers.

Director Woodie Wilson said not only does it help the animals get activity and get socialized while they await their forever homes, but many of his volunteers have also found it helps them get some well needed activity and exercise.

"He [the dog] gets exercise, he gets socialization and you get exercise, so it's a win-win for everybody,” said Wilson.

If you’re not near Denton, Wilson said most shelters are always in need of volunteers too and tend to be flexible with time schedules for people looking to help out.
