About 200 cars trapped inside a partially collapsed Uptown parking garage for two months will finally be safely removed.
The first car emerged from the garage at about 7:55 p.m. Sunday.
“It’s a great Christmas present for everybody to get that call saying your car is out,” said Tim Doyle, board president of The Renaissance on Turtle Creek.
The cars were trapped Oct. 23, when the seven level parking garage at the Renaissance partially collapsed during heavy rains.
No one was hurt, but well over 200 cars were trapped inside. About two dozen of them were damaged.
“We’ve been working on this plan for months, and to finally see it come to fruition and actually happen so that we can get our cars back to our owners is, we’re just ecstatic that we can do this,” said Doyle.

Contractors started working around the clock within weeks of the collapse to erect four levels of scaffolding supporting bridges spanning the collapsed sections.
“It’s been amazing, the speed at which they’re going about doing this in a safe manner, taking out the damaged debris, and now everything from the inside is cleaned out, all of the damaged cars that were at the bottom are gone,” said Doyle.
All of the 200 remaining cars should be out of the garage this week.
“I’m excited yes, it’s been a while but luckily we have rental cars to help us out but it will be nice to get my car back,” said Renaissance resident Robert Celli, whose car was first in line to come out.
There’s no official word yet what caused the accident.
