Toyota Donates $1 Million to DART for Collin County Taxi Service

Toyota announced Tuesday it will contribute $1 million to help with public transportation woes in Collin County.

The donation will be made to Dallas Area Rapid Transit.

"This is directed at the elderly in Collin County as well as those who have special medical needs that are non-emergency who don't have a way to get to medical appointments," said Latondra Newton, Toyota chief social innovation officer.

The announcement was made at the University of Texas at Dallas campus in Richardson at an event hosted by Toyota.

The company also revealed renderings of how its new North American headquarters in Plano will look once construction is completed in late 2016 or early 2017.

Newton said the money will extend funding for a paratransit service.

Passengers will receive a "value card" to pay for rides by appointment.

The service is similar to a popular service offered by TAPS public transit before the company suddenly went out of business in Collin County late last year.

Newton said program details are still being worked out. She said the service will extend only to riders in Allen, Fairview and Wylie and should begin in September.
