The seven-year-old Eurocopter was on a training exercise near Alliance Airport in Fort Worth when it appears the tail rotor went out, which caused the helicopter to go down, according to a Fort Worth Fire Department official familiar with the preliminary investigation.
The helicopter burst into flames after the crash, but the three people inside were still able to escape unharmed according to fire and Federal Aviation Administration officials.
FAA investigators were on the way to the crash site just north of Alliance Airport Sunday afternoon to look into the incident.
The chopper is registered to Horizon Air Corp from Barceloneta, PR. The company could not be reached for comment.
