Thousands Visit Houston for Organists' Convention

More than 1,200 people are expected to visit Houston this week for the bi-annual American Guild of Organists national convention.

The Houston Chronicle reports that attendees will visit 18 sites, churches or performance halls around the region, including St. Phillip, the Grand Organ at Rice University, and the Co-Cathedral of the Sacred Heart and Edythe Bates Old Recital Hall.

A number of respected classical musicians call Houston home. Houston native Daryl Robinson won the guild's young artist award in 2012, and University of Houston student Kirk Rich placed second in the competition this year.

The guild was created 120 years ago and last had its national convention in Houston in 1988.
