Thieves Distract Victims to Steal Credit Cards: Police

Suspects spend tens of thousands of dollars on stolen credit cards in North Texas

Police in North Texas are looking for at least three people who they say racked up thousands of dollars on stolen credit cards.

Investigators believe a man and two women are working as a team where one suspect will simply just walk up and start talking to the victim to distract them. That's when the other suspect makes the move stealing cash, credit cards and personal belongings.

Barbara Jones, of Irving, said she was distracted while shopping at a TJ Maxx store in Irving.

“During that time, I had this lady approach me asking what I was shopping for and I told her,” said Jones.

But what Jones didn't realize was someone else was stealing her wallet right out from underneath her.

“I didn't realize that these three people were working me,” said Jones. “But after my wallet went missing, they definitely were working me.”

Police believe the same suspects used stolen credit cards from at least two other victims. Pictures show the suspects at a Neiman Marcus in Plano. Police say they also went on a shopping spree at two Apple stores. They spent $13,000 at one Apple store in Southlake and about $10,000 at another Apple store in Plano. They also purchased $8,500 worth of merchandise at a Neiman Marcus in Plano.

"You look back and you think, 'Oh how stupid?'" said Jones. "But ladies, keep your purses on your shoulder or around your neck."

Anyone who recognizes the people captured in surveillance images from the stores is asked to call police.
