It may soon be game over for an aging Denton golf course.
Leaders from Texas Woman's University will meet with the Denton City Council Tuesday night to brainstorm options for the school's golf course.
TWU Vice President for Student Life Monica Mendez-Grant said the public course has operated at the school for many years, but overall participation there has hit about a 25-year low, according to a recent study.
WindRose Global found that less than 3 percent of the golfers on the course are TWU students or staff, but the major fall in attendance there has cost them an average of $150,000 per year lately as student fees are left to cover operating costs.
Meanwhile they found that course uses 20 million gallons of water annually, is about 1,500 yards shorter than most modern courses and takes up 108 of the Denton campus's 270 acres.
"We definitely have a responsibility to ensure we're making decisions that are in the best interest of the students," said Mendez-Grant.
It comes at a time when TWU is expecting another very large semester of enrollment and campus leaders are considering new options like a parking garage and more on-campus housing for their growing student body.

The course could provide prime space for things like that.
However, golfers on the course Monday said they hope leaders can find a way to keep it up and running.
"There's only one good golf course in Denton; it's this one," said Stephen McCool. "You've got to keep the money in Denton."
At this point Mendez-Grant said no decisions have been made and they are open to considering all possible options for the course, but they hope to figure something out in the near future.
"[We're] always interested in opportunities for partnership, but at the end of the day, Texas Woman's University is going to make a decision that represents the best core values," she said.
Grant will present WindRose Global's findings to the Denton City Council Tuesday afternoon in the council work session room at City Hall.
