Texas Veterans Parade Crash That Killed 4 Set To Go To Trial

A civil trial for 17 people who were hurt or had family members killed when a freight train struck a veterans parade float in Midland in 2012 is set to begin.

The trial in the lawsuit, which begins Monday in Midland, involves those who did not reach a confidential out-of-court settlement Jan. 16 with Union Pacific Railroad.

Just before the crash that killed four, the parade float filled with wounded veterans and their spouses was inching across a railroad track when the crossing gates began to lower and a freight train bore down on them.

Some seated on the float jumped off just moments before the train -- traveling at more than 60 mph -- crashed into the truck.

A federal investigation blamed the accident on city and parade organizers.
