Texas Tech Graduate Among Injured in Las Vegas Mass Shooting

A Texas Tech University graduate is among the injured after a man opened fire on a crowd of thousands at a country music festival in Las Vegas, her family says.

Danae Gibbs graduated from Texas Tech in May and currently lives in Austin, her father said.

On Sunday, Gibbs was attending the Route 91 Harvest country music festival when shots started to ring out shortly after 10 p.m.

Gibbs was shot in the leg and remains in the hospital, according to her father, Darrell Gibbs.

He said his daughter and a friend had gone to Las Vegas to attend the country music concert.

"Two days ago, life was normal, life was wonderful," Darrell Gibbs said in an interview Tuesday.

He said his daughter laid on the ground when the shooting started, not realizing the gunfire was coming from above.

"They get on the ground, they're monitoring the situation," Darrell Gibbs said. "There's a lull in it. They make a break for it. The shooting starts up again."

That's when the bullets started landing closer, he said.

"She kind of looks at her friend and says, 'I think I'm going to get hit.' About that time she feels a pain in her leg," he said.

She hid under a food truck until a stranger in a pickup truck rushed her and other victims to a hospital, he said.

Danae Gibbs is expected to be released from the hospital in the next few days, her father said.

She is expected to make a full recovery, but the bullet went through her leg and lodged near her spine. Doctors say it is too dangerous to remove right now, her family said.

Her father said he is grateful for the doctors and medical staff who helped save her life — and for the driver of the pickup who got her to the hospital.

"Angels come in different forms," Darrell Gibbs said. "Heroes don't necessarily wear badges or kavalar or go to war. All it takes is one moment to be a hero, to step up and do the right thing."
