Texas Tech Names Interim President

The vice chancellor of academic affairs for the Texas Tech University System has been named interim president of the flagship campus in Lubbock.

John Opperman was chosen Thursday to replace M. Duane Nellis, who's stepping down as president on Jan. 22 but will remain with the faculty.

Regents say a search committee has been formed to hire a new president for Texas Tech University. Officials say Opperman, who's taught economic courses and is a former chief financial officer for the system, won't be a candidate for school president.

Opperman holds a bachelor's degree from Texas Tech University, plus advanced degrees from the University of Texas.

Nellis was among three finalists last year to lead the University of Wyoming but he didn't get the job.
