Texas State Aquarium Announces $50M Expansion

A popular place to see fish in Texas will be getting bigger.

The Texas State Aquarium in Corpus Christi on Wednesday announced a $50 million expansion plan for a wing called Caribbean Journey.

Officials say the project, the largest expansion in the aquarium's 24-year history, completes the final phases of the original master plan. Backers so far have raised about $25 million for the work.

The proposed 65,000-square-foot wing joins the original Gulf of Mexico exhibit building. The new area would include sharks, tropical fish, birds and reptiles of the Western Caribbean.

Aquarium authorities say the expansion also applies to conservation and wildlife rehabilitation programs, plus adds an education center for excellence.
