Texas Standardized Test Panel Asked to Consider Online Exam

A panel considering updates to the standardized test for Texas high school students has received suggestions ranging from offering the exam online to no longer requiring passing to graduate.

The State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness, or STAAR, was implemented in 2012.

The Austin American-Statesman reports the 15-member Texas Commission on Next Generation Assessments and Accountability has been looking at a variety of possible improvements.

Recommendations must be forwarded to Texas legislators by September as officials consider overhauling the exam or replacing it.

The newspaper reported Friday that some other suggestions include assessing students more frequently but on a smaller scale throughout the year, shortening the state curriculum standards that the tests cover or replacing end-of-course exams with the SAT or ACT.
