Texas Sheriff's Deputy Recovering After Shooting, Suspect Caught

A South Texas sheriff's deputy has survived being shot twice while trying to apprehend a suspect who was later caught.

The Bexar County Sheriff's Office says Deputy Joseph Canales was in stable condition Saturday at a San Antonio hospital. Canales was wearing a protective vest Friday night when he was shot in the arm and chest.

Deputies arrested Sherman Robinson of Rosenberg at a nearby apartment complex. Robinson was charged with aggravated assault against a public servant and felony possession of a firearm.

Investigators said the suspect just left a convenience store when Canales drove up and tried to stop him amid suspicious activity. Authorities said the suspect opened fire, with bullets also hitting the patrol car.

Online records Saturday didn't immediately list bond or an attorney representing Robinson.
