Texas Senator John Cornyn Among Candidates for FBI Director

Texas Senior Senator John Cornyn, is among 8 candidates who have been interviewed for Director of the FBI. Cornyn interviewed for the position on Saturday afternoon.

Congressman John Ratcliffe, (R-Rockwall), calls his an excellent choice.

“Senator Cornyn is imminently qualified. I am excited that he is the type of candidate President Trump is considering for such an important position,” said Ratcliffe.

Cornyn is a former Texas Supreme Court Justice, and he was also Attorney General of the state.

Cornyn has risen to one of the highest positions in republican senate leadership.

“One of the concerns that we should all have as Texans would be losing someone of Senator Cornyn's stature. He is the number 2 republican in the Senate, he is the republican majority whip, so he yields a lot of influence and that inures to the benefit of all Texans so that is something that I hope would be within his consideration in making that choice.” he added

But fellow Republican Lindsey Graham believes this is not the time for someone with a political background to take over the agency.

“I think it is now time to pick somebody that comes from within the ranks, or is such of reputation that has no political background at all, that can go into the job on day one. You know, who does the FBI director work for? To me it is like appointing a Judge. The President actually appoints a judge but the judge is loyal to the law. The president appoints the FBI director but the FBI director has to be loyal to the law. John Cornyn is a wonderful man. Under normal circumstances would be a superb choice to be FBI director. But these are not normal circumstances,” said Senator Lindsey Graham, (R–SC).

We reached out to Senator Cornyn’s office about the interview. His staff referred us to his Friday statement, after news broke that he was being considered. Cornyn said "I have the distinct privilege of serving 28 million Texans in the United States Senate, and that is where my focus remains.”
