Texas Rangers Investigate University Park Death in Custody

The Texas Rangers are now investigating an in-custody death Tuesday in University Park.

Police said it started as a suspicious activity call when, just after 12:30 a.m., an alarm company asked officers to check into a man seen on surveillance at a gate outside a residence in the 3900 block of Lovers Lane.

Officers said they saw the man and tried to talk to him but he was uncooperative, pushed an officer to the ground and began to run.

University Park police said officers stopped the man in the 4000 block of Amherst and when he refused to cooperate and fought with officers, that's when one of the officers used pepper spray on him.

Department policy requires officers call paramedics when pepper spray is used. Police said after paramedics arrived, the man, later identified as 23-year-old Thomas Klessig, became unresponsive and officers and paramedics began CPR.

The man was taken to Presbyterian Hospital, where at 2:25 a.m. Klessig was pronounced dead.

Klessig's mother told NBC 5 her son went on and off his medication, but Tuesday had been a good day for her son.

The Dallas County Medical Examiner's Office has not ruled on the cause of his death.
