Texas Principal in No-Spanish Dispute Losing Job

A Houston-area school principal who barred students from speaking Spanish on campus will be losing her job.

The Hempstead Independent School District board on Monday night decided not to retain Amy Lacey, whose contract expires at the end of the school term.

The Houston Chronicle reports the principal at Hempstead Middle School has been on paid administrative leave since December following her announcement that was quickly rescinded by her bosses.

District officials sent a letter to parents assuring them that Spanish is not banned at the Hempstead school, where more than half of the students are Hispanic.

Leaders of some minority groups have asked the federal government to investigate possible civil rights violations since then.

No publicly listed phone number could immediately be located Wednesday for Lacey.
